Specialist Referrals in China for Foreigners

by China Medical Services

For an international enquiry, the useful starting point is a clearly stated referral question and an identified receiving department. A hospital name alone does not establish which specialist will see you or what the service includes. Explain whether you want a review of existing records, a consultation about an established diagnosis or an assessment of possible treatment. Let the receiving clinical team identify its assessment requirements.

A Referral Needs a Receiving Department

Keep the referral letter and original reports together. If your home clinician has written a specific question, preserve that wording. Ask the receiving department to confirm that it handles the enquiry and explain any missing information. Do not substitute a coordinator’s interpretation of the diagnosis for the original medical documents.

Questions to Confirm

  • Which department has accepted the enquiry, and what type of appointment is proposed?
  • Is the requested specialist confirmed, or will the department assign a reviewer?
  • Can the team review the available records before deciding whether an in-person appointment is appropriate?
  • Which additional documents are requested, and why are they needed for this enquiry?
  • What language support is confirmed for the consultation and subsequent explanation?
  • How will the referral response be sent to you and, with permission, your home clinician?

Before the Next Commitment

A referral is a route to assessment, not a guarantee that a particular intervention will be offered. If another department is suggested, ask for the reason and whether a new appointment or different records are required. Keep both responses so your home clinician can understand how the enquiry developed.

Use the Original Referral Question

A referral enquiry can lose its purpose if it becomes only a request for a famous hospital. Keep the question from your treating clinician visible. Ask the receiving department whether it is the appropriate destination for that question and whether another specialty should be involved. A change of department is something to clarify, not evidence that a coordinator has made a new diagnosis.

If you have more than one relevant condition, list the existing diagnoses and recommendations without deciding yourself which one controls the treatment choice. Ask the clinical team how it will consider them. Preserve separate reports instead of merging different professionals’ opinions into a single unsigned document.

China Medical Services provides record and appointment coordination and bilingual accompaniment within an agreed scope. It is not a physician and does not diagnose or prescribe. Ask about the practical service available for this referral and the hospital’s own response. Keep any resulting clinical opinion for discussion with your treating clinician, including limitations or requests for more evidence.

Coordination and Clinical Responsibilities

China Medical Services helps organize hospital enquiries, existing records, appointment communication and practical support. Clinical decisions belong to qualified treating professionals. Ask about the specific tasks you need through our patient coordination service; confirm availability, scope and fees in writing before proceeding.

For an enquiry, describe the question, the records already available and the support requested. Do not post medical files publicly. Ask how patient permission and secure document transfer will be handled before sending sensitive information. A coordination reply is not a clinical recommendation or a confirmation of hospital acceptance.

General planning information, not medical or legal advice. Individual clinical decisions belong to qualified treating professionals.
