About this hospital
Shenzhen Children's Hospital is China's largest and most technologically advanced children's hospital by several measures — including ranking first nationwide in pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplantation volume — and has rapidly ascended to the top tier of Chinese pediatric institutions in the short span since its 1997 founding. With a new campus that is the world's largest single-building children's hospital and a recent international hospital accreditation, it exemplifies Shenzhen's ambition to build world-class healthcare from scratch.
History and Scale: Established in 1997 in central Futian District, the hospital achieved Grade A tertiary children's hospital status — Guangdong's first — and has since grown into a two-campus system. The original Futian campus, with approximately 1,331 beds in 170,000 square meters, anchors pediatric care for central Shenzhen. In October 2024, the Longhua campus opened as the largest single-building children's hospital in the world by floor area (310,000 square meters), adding 1,500 planned beds. A science and education complex with an additional 600 beds is under construction. At full build-out, the system will reach approximately 3,400 beds. In 2025, the hospital recorded 2.49 million outpatient and emergency visits, 88,000 inpatient discharges, and 46,500 surgeries. It employs over 3,000 staff, including 187 PhDs, 523 senior professionals, 33 doctoral supervisors, and 154 master's supervisors.
Star Specialties: The Department of Hematology and Oncology has achieved national prominence, performing China's highest volume of pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplants — 264 in 2023 alone, ranking first among all children's hospitals for three consecutive years. The hospital's five provincial-level key specialties form the core of its clinical excellence: Pediatrics (designated Guangdong High-Level Key Clinical Specialty), Pediatric Intensive Care (PICU), Pediatric Surgery, Neonatology (NICU), and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Five municipal key specialties add further depth: Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, Pediatric Respiratory Medicine, Pediatric Neurology, Pediatric Surgery, and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery. The hospital is also a national leader in pediatric interventional ultrasound and was among the first in China to perform pediatric vocal cord paralysis surgery and congenital laryngomalacia repair. The PICU runs an active ECMO program. In April 2026, it became the first children's hospital in China to pass the new international hospital accreditation standards.
Achievements and Recognition: In the national tertiary hospital performance evaluation for children's hospitals, the hospital achieved Grade A status and ranked 9th nationally in 2022. Its clinical medicine discipline entered the ESI global top 1% in 2023. In the 2023 STEM evaluations, six disciplines ranked in the national top 100: Pediatrics (9th), Hematology (50th), Otolaryngology (35th), Allergology (51st), Rheumatology (72nd), and Psychiatry (92nd). On the Fudan Regional Rankings, both Pediatric Internal Medicine and Pediatric Surgery rank 2nd in South China. The hospital ranked 67th nationally in the China Hospital Innovation and Transformation Ranking, 2nd among children's hospitals, and 1st in both Shenzhen and among all children's hospitals for patent commercialization volume.
International Services: The hospital's International Medical Service Department, located in the Futian campus VIP wing, provides English-speaking pediatricians, dedicated appointment and admission coordinators, and family-centered care pathways designed for international families. The hematology-oncology transplant program has experience treating children from across Asia, and the hospital can provide full English-language treatment protocols for international referring physicians. The Longhua campus has been designed with international patient services from the ground up, including family accommodation suites for long-stay transplant and oncology families. The hospital's 2026 international accreditation further formalizes its commitment to internationally benchmarked care standards.
Why Choose Shenzhen Children's Hospital: For international families whose children require hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for thalassemia, leukemia, or genetic disorders, this hospital offers the world's highest-volume pediatric transplant program with outcomes that match or exceed international benchmarks — at a fraction of Western costs. Its comprehensive pediatric subspecialty coverage means that even children with multi-system complex conditions (cardiac + neurological + hematological) can receive coordinated care without transferring between hospitals. Shenzhen's excellent air connectivity, modern infrastructure, and relatively international environment make it a more accessible medical travel destination for families than traditional mainland medical cities.
