Must-try foods in Qingdao

China's most famous beer, brewed since 1903 by German settlers. Best enjoyed fresh from the tap at the annual beer festival or a beachside stall.

Tiny local clams wok-fried with dried chili and garlic until they pop open. The quintessential Qingdao beer snack — salty, spicy, addictive.

Plump boiled dumplings filled with a fluffy, aromatic mackerel-and-pork filling. A coastal Shandong specialty unlike any other dumpling.

Whole jumbo prawns sautéed and braised in a sweet-savory soy-wine sauce. Rich, glossy, and intensely seafood-forward.

Slippery, gelatinous sea cucumber braised with thick scallion sections in a rich brown sauce. A prized Shandong banquet delicacy.

Long, golden-crisp pan-fried dumplings, often with a delicate seafood-and-pork filling. Three crispy sides, one juicy bite.

Tiny chewy flour dumplings (geda) in a savory broth with shrimp, clams, and greens. A rustic, comforting Qingdao home-cooking classic.
Sights in Qingdao

Qingdao's most iconic symbol — a 440m pier extending into Qingdao Bay with the octagonal Huilan Pavilion at its tip. Views of the red-roofed German colonial old town and the modern skyline across the water.

A seaside neighborhood of tree-lined avenues named after ancient military passes, filled with villas in over 20 national architectural styles built during the German and Japanese colonial periods. Stunning at any season, legendary in autumn.

The highest coastal mountain in China, rising 1,133m from the Yellow Sea. A sacred Daoist site for over 2,000 years, with ancient temples, granite peaks, and spring water that feeds Qingdao's famous Tsingtao Brewery.

Located in the original 1903 German brewery building, this excellent museum traces the history of China's most famous beer. The tour ends with fresh draft beer tasting in the historic brewhouse.

The 2008 Olympic sailing venue, now a waterfront leisure district with marina views, seaside promenades, upscale restaurants, and the dramatic May Wind sculpture. The evening light show on the skyline across the bay is spectacular.
