About

Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center (SPHCC) is Shanghai's flagship infectious disease hospital, affiliated with Fudan University and located on a large purpose-built campus in Jinshan District. With roots tracing back over a century to the city's original isolation hospital, it is nationally ranked in tuberculosis care and serves as the city's designated center for serious infectious diseases, from viral hepatitis and TB to emerging respiratory infections.

History & scale

SPHCC descends from Shanghai's early-twentieth-century infectious disease hospital and was rebuilt in 2004 as a modern biosafety-oriented campus with large-scale negative-pressure ward capacity — a design choice that made it the backbone of Shanghai's response to every major infectious disease event since. As a Fudan University affiliate it combines clinical care with an active research program in virology, immunology and antimicrobial resistance.

Star specialties

Tuberculosis care is nationally ranked in the top five, covering drug-susceptible and drug-resistant disease with full laboratory support. The hepatitis program manages the complete arc of chronic hepatitis B and C, cirrhosis and liver cancer surveillance. HIV medicine at SPHCC is among the most experienced in China, and the emerging infectious disease service — backed by biosafety laboratories and isolation infrastructure — makes the center the city's answer to novel pathogens. General respiratory medicine, infection-related ICU care and infectious disease imaging round out the platform.

Achievements & recognition

SPHCC holds a national top-five specialty reputation ranking in tuberculosis and served as Shanghai's designated treatment center during major infectious disease responses, including COVID-19. Its Fudan affiliation supports a research output in infectious disease that few Chinese hospitals match.

International services

As Shanghai's designated infectious disease hospital, SPHCC has more experience with foreign patients than most specialist public hospitals — expatriates with hepatitis, TB or HIV are commonly managed here. Core consultations still run in Chinese, so a bilingual companion is advised. The Jinshan campus is roughly an hour from central Shanghai; plan transport accordingly, which our coordinators arrange routinely.

Why choose this hospital

Choose SPHCC if you live in or near Shanghai and need long-term management of hepatitis, TB or HIV, or expert evaluation of a suspected serious infection — this is the institution the city itself relies on when infectious disease gets difficult.
